Nowadays, startup CEOs and online business owners face a big problem — the theft of their product. Someone takes their idea or concept and even steals their code. As a result, the entrepreneur loses the product and years of work. How do you avoid theft and secure yourself? The answer is in this article.

I Am The Law!

Don’t hesitate to patent your product or services if they are innovative. In our times something new without a patent could be stolen at any moment. There are teams that specialize in copying products and services by making things in a week that you were working on for a year. They then patent it.

You can visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to file a provisional patent application. You can do so online or by using some software for patent creation — Patentwizard and Invent + Patent System.

PPA costs a little over $100. A provisional patent application will protect your idea for up to one year and will allow you to label your idea as “patent pending.” You can then use the year to gain valuable insight into your idea.

However, don’t hesitate to patent your product a with a good lawyer. Having a patent created by yourself won’t solve this problem if you are not a lawyer. People who patent on their own often make mistakes that are considered in court. As a result, they might lose the case and their product.

To avoid it, don’t save money on lawyers. Find a lawyer that specializes in patents. Even thousands dollars spent on the patenting stage could save your product that will be worth millions of dollars. The price you pay for patenting depends on the complexity of your product.

The same goes for creating a trade mark. The only difference is that trademarks are usually used if the product isn’t so innovative that it requires a patent.

People associate your product with your trademark so you should create it anyway.
