There are lots of social networking apps nowadays. All of them are developed for different purposes, but there are still some similar components between them.

We are going to talk about some universal features that usually make up the core of social networking apps.

Profile

In real life, people have an appearance. In social networking, apps have their profile pages.

Profile pages usually contain a photo, name and/or nickname, friends/followers number, some basic info and the user’s posts (if the app has this feature).

Regarding the fact that it is an app and the page is limited by a smartphone’s screen, UI elements must be small to fit in it. Large amounts of small elements will overload the screen. This is why app developers don’t supplement mentioned profile page components.

However, remember that the main goal is to provide the best user experience by incarnating your app’s idea. If you are creating a chat app that doesn’t need the feature to post photos or videos, then feel free to ignore it and concentrate on the main feature, chat.

Chat

Let your users share in app messages. This will make possible seamless sharing of thoughts and emotions. Also, let people share the main app content in messages.

For example, if the purpose of your app is to share pet’s photos, then let your users share photos in messages also. People can be unsure about the photo, so they could ask their friends about it in the app. This will make their in-app experience better.

However, if your users can deal without chat then let it be. Don’t waste your resources on features which are unneeded.

The above mentioned components are important because they provide socializing in your app. But it isn’t a must have to contain every one of them in your app.
Research, gain feedback from your users, and choose what features will make the best experience for using your app!
