In 2014, a cartoon avatar collage app went viral in China. Overnight, cartoon avatars generated by a collage app called MYoTee flooded every major social network platform. In Wechat, 8–9 of every 10 posts during the viral period are from MYoTee, and more than half of the users changed their profile picture to the avatar they shared. Why MYoTee became such a huge success out of millions of apps?

First of all, MYoTee is useful in at least 3 ways: It offers a creative way for people to make a statement of their personalities. The variety of avatars is fun to watch. And with more and more people sharing their MYoTee avatars, sharing one’s own MYoTee avatar becomes a trendy social activity.

Moreover, MYoTee is sharable. The resulting images are fun enough to make an interesting content to share. In the very beginning, being able to share such avatars is actually a singnal of comparitive advantage — not everyone knows how to generate a cartoon avatar. As more and more people sharing their MYoTee avatar, creating and sharing one’s own gradually become a have-to.

Last but not least, MYoTee is easy to use and share. It takes only 5 simple steps to come up with a high-quality customized Avatar, and one more click to share the generated content to any of the major social platforms.

Lessons from the success of MYoTee to social media management: 1. create contents that are relevant, useful and enjoyable to the audience. 2. encourage them to share by offering values of sharing. 3. make it easy.
