The monument designed Douglas Cardinal is supposed to pay homage to the pivotal role of First Nations people in the building of Canada, and will be revealed at a grand opening on Oct. 7th at Decew House Heritage Park.

Thorold city council donated $5,000 toward the monument.

According to an article in The Spec, the circular design of Cardinal’s monument “is a symbol of welcoming, inclusion and protection in native cultures. The curved walls are abstract symbols of Haudenosaunee longhouses that open to the east and west.

A central hearth, surrounded by seating, is represented by a translucent glowing glass sphere symbolizing the sun. The sphere was handcrafted by master glass-blower Angelo Rossi, a Niagara Falls-based artisan.” — https://www.thespec.com/news-story/7587755-first-nations-peace-monument-taking-shape/
