We had just climbed the hill to Miss Myra’s and I caught up with a guy I hadn’t ridden with all year. That’s not unusual; he traveled a lot and would sometimes log runs from the Louisiana bayous. “I’ll be a lot stronger by the end of the summer,” he told me. When I asked if he was still traveling a lot, he said he’d gone from six months on, six months off to two weeks on, four weeks off. A guy who had pulled up behind us asked what he did. He said he’s an engineer on an oil-field services supply vessel. The price of oil always seemed an abstraction, a price we didn’t pay directly that affected another price we did. Now a new, more personal, inverse correlation: oil prices decline and training miles increase. But only to a point.
