We had about 30 riders for a winter pace ride. It is impossible to keep that many riders at the same speed during the racing season, but during the winter it ought to be easier. Let’s face it: None of us will be racing in Belgium in the spring. Actually, I take that back. The kid who rode with us and is on a development team actually will be racing in Belgium this spring. But when a group that big ~ men and women, ages 19 to 60+ ~ holds it together for 70 miles and still averages 18 or so it feels like you’ve accomplished something more than just covering the distance. And for someone who lets attacks go, and is grateful to hang on as long as I can during the summer, a ride like yesterday’s feels like a gift.
