150 words about 1,300 miles and family
Last night the Alabama Backroads Century Series celebrated 36 cyclists who completed at least 10 of the series’ 13 100-mile rides. But one rider, Roberto Aldo Yburan, stood out. There was a lot of talk about weight loss, the joy of the open road, lower blood pressure ~ you get the idea. But Aldo had a very different story. Sure, he loved riding the series like the rest of us. But he rode every day for a more important reason. For two and a half years he rode to and from work, every day, rain or shine. He did it not to prove a point or complete an arbitrary goal. He did it so he could delay buying a car and use that money to bring his family over from the Philippines, a move he made several years before. Makes my bike rides feel like the trivial indulgence they are.
