Report: Sacramento Offers RFA Otto Porter 4-Year, 106 Million Dollar Offer Sheet

With an over abundance of cap space and an under abundance of talent on the roster, the Sacramento Kings extended a 4-year, 106 million dollar offer sheet to Washington Wizards forward Otto Porter.

Before going any further, it’s worth noting: Porter has not yet signed the offer sheet and still has meetings to take with other teams. However, with the most amount of available salary cap space in the NBA, this is a very smart and savvy move by Sacramento General Manager Vlade Divac.

Wait, did I just say that?

Porter enjoyed a breakout campaign in his fourth NBA season, averaging 13.4 points per game (51.6 percent shooting from the field, 43.4 percent shooting from three), an eFG (effective field goal percentage) of 60.8 percent, and 6.4 rebounds a game. All of those were career highs.

Should Washington, who are in a very untenable cap situation, choose not to match the offer, Sacramento will be getting a quality young starting wing in Porter Jr., who would fit almost perfectly (on paper) in the new look Kings roster.

Porter Jr. and Buddy Hield would potentially be one of the better young shooting wing pairings in the Association. Though a rookie, 5th overall pick De’Arron Fox has drawn comparisons to John Wall, who just happens to be the point guard Porter Jr. has been playing with the first four years of his career.

Also worth noting, however, Porter Jr. would be facing considerably more defensive attention from opposing teams as he would be the de facto “star” of the Sacramento Kings. On the other side of that same coin, his presence would conceivably create marginally better looks for the younger players on the team.

With Porter Jr. in tow, the Kings would have one of the more intriguing young cores in the league with Fox, Hield, Skal Labissiere, Willie Cauley-Stein, Bogdan Bogdonavic, Georgios Papagiannis, Harry Giles, Justin Jackson, Malachi Richardson, and Frank Mason III.

This is like Bizarro World. The NBA is a strange place sometimes.

What’s even better for the Kings: they have more than enough space to continue being aggressive in the RFA market, with players like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Andre Roberson (the Kings need a defensive-minded wing), Jonathan Simmons, Nikola Mirotic, and Bojan Bogdonavic (it’s always cool to see brothers playing on the same team) still available, all of whom are currently on teams with a less than desirable salary cap situation.

But, well done, Vlade. Seriously, I’m shocked.
