Festival highlights, ethical guidelines and inside the faker’s lab
Hi everyone,
So after a very busy five days of Italian sunshine and the latest issues and innovations in the world of modern journalism, we are back from the International Journalism Festival in Perugia.
You can catch up with what happened on the IJF16 website and watch the videos on their YouTube channel, but here’s our coverage of everything First Draft related:
- Google trainer Eliabetta Tola ran through some of the basic newsgathering and verification tools from the web giant
- Experts discussed the causes and treatment of vicarious trauma, and howmanagement should be taking a much more active role
- Josh Stearns and Craig Silverman went into detail on four case studies in verification
- A panel of experts looked at how chat apps and closed networks are increasingly important in newsgathering, and the all-important role of trust in navigating them
- First Drafters talked over how journalists need to be more aware ofthe responsibilities and risks of dealing with eyewitnesses on social media during breaking news events
- Fergus Bell and Mandy Jenkins detailed some of their tips and techniques for social newsgathering
What else was there?
Agence-France Presse have updated their editorial standards to include handling UGC; Storyful’s Derek Bowler investigated the unethical use of UGC in Ireland, with lessons for us all; the folks at Ghost Boat launched a campaign to crowdsource finding evidence of 243 people whose boat went missing in the Mediterranean, and BuzzFeed went deep inside Facebook to find out why (oh why) there is just so much fake news out there.
We’ll be back on a more even keel next week, but until then, all the best and stay true,
Alastair
