As the number of books across the parenting genre continues to grow, it’s hard to discern the good from the bad and the downright useless. Here’s a look at some excellent reads, whether you are looking for some support or just need a good laugh after a long day.

How-To for Babies

The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp M.D.

A must-read for new parents, this book helps nervous first-timers understand their new baby’s development and provides a five-step process to keep their little one calm and happy.

Gentle Sleep Solutions by Andrea Grace

Andrea, a top London sleep consultant, provides step-by-step instructions to get your baby to sleep in a gentle manner and presents a number of case studies that you can relate to.

Oh Crap! Potty Training by Jamie Glowacki

A book passed from parent to parent at preschools everywhere, Jamie helps you flush your fears about potty training and believe that you can lose the diapers once and for all.

How-to for Older Children

Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child by Mark Weissbluth

An informative and supportive book that extends from babyhood into childhood, this book helps us understand the importance of sleep and provides advice on how to help our children get the best rest possible for their development.

Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka

Not just for the intense and sensitive child, this manual helps parents fully understand their child’s behaviour and temperament, as well as how to handle difficult situations for the benefit of the entire household.

Why Smart Kids Worry: And What Parents Can Do to Help by Allison Edwards

As mental health and anxiety are on top of every parent’s mind these days, Edwards’ manual explains how some kids tend to think steps ahead and provides tools for easing anxiety and bringing them back to the present.

Culture / Memoir

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua

A bittersweet and controversial memoir of a Chinese American “tiger” who raised her two daughters to become musical prodigies and academic superstars, this book explores the (often hilarious) cultural warfare between a second-generation mother and her American children.

French Children Don’t Throw Food by Pamela Druckerman

A beautifully written book that is impossible to put down, this wonderfully entertaining memoir of an American mother’s experience raising her children in a very foreign-feeling France is both fascinating and hilarious.

Humour

Why Mummy Drinks by Gil Simms

The first of the “Why Mummy” series, the protagonist of this fictional laugh-out-loud romp is a funny, self-deprecating yet ambitious and realistic mummy we can all relate to.
