Week One: Baseline and Analyze!

Wonder WHY you waste so much water?

Did you know the average flow rate of a shower in America is 2.1 gallons per minute? That is enough water to relieve a person’s thirst for 4.2 days. Assuming humans need half a gallon of water per day. THAT IS INSANE.

Luckily, the average flow rate for my shower is only 1.4 gallons per minute. That is a little less insane but it is still a large amount of water. So showering faster should help reduce unnecessary water use by a little right? It can save more than you think it can. During the first three days, I was able to save 39.7 gallons of water! Yet water companies make it look like it’s not a big deal since they only charge $1.50 for 1,000 gallons of water.

Also, the average American uses 17.2 gallons per day by taking showers. By doing the DOT project, I am using an average of 11.8 gallons of water every day (31.4% less)!

Now…. enough talking and let’s switch to the math behind all those numbers!

Before doing our DOT project, we needed to collect our baseline data. For me this involved recording how long I was in the shower and the flow rate of my shower.

How to find the flow rate by our teacher ┗(◠‿◠✿)┓

The average flow rate for my shower was 1.4 gallons per minute. While the average flow rate for showers in America is 2.1 gallons per minute. My shower uses less than 33.4% than the average. That’s good!

But now is when you call me crazy

My average shower time everyday is 22.5 minutes resulting in water use of 31.6 gallons. That is a lot!

So this means that my project is going well, since there’s an average of 19.9 gallons saved per day and a total of 139 gallons saved during Week 1! Also, I noticed a “bad” habit of showering: waiting for the shower to get hot. During Week 2, I plan to find a method to change that habit or find a way to use the time I am waiting efficiently!
