Going into faculty reviews for this upcoming Friday, I am feeling comfortable in what I am developing — I have put thorough thought behind the content that I have developed, and the real trick now is to design some visual artifacts — or, more simply, what this book is going to look like on a very real level. This part definitely frightens me a bit, as it becomes real from that point forward. I have my grids, I have my type choices, now making a compelling book is the challenge, and I think beginning to create will inform how I can potentially make this book all the more compelling and exciting to interact with on various levels (as outlined in the content structure). I also think it will be important to maximize how typography plays a role in this book, as photo alone does not really encapsulate my five years of design education. I view this as an exciting opportunity, however, as D.J. (in one of our 1:1 meetings) pointed out that many jazz album covers were explorations in type, and these visual compositions I believe will heavily influence what I end up creating. To capture the emotive qualities of jazz through experimentation as well as homage is that perfect balance of respecting the old and introducing the new that I think my project has needed. When people interact with the paper, read the words, and navigate the publication, I hope that something new altogether will come out of it, something that can exist beyond the book’s own creation in the creative spirit of the user.

It’s getting more and more real by the moment.
