When playing cards with Death, make sure he has nothing up his sleeve. You can’t cheat Death, but death can cheat you.
Joe knew the universe measured his time on earth in days and months, not years and decades, and he was content with his lot. Cancer, never one to leave a victim behind, was hot on his heels. He had tried everything to conquer it but to no avail. Nothing any sorcerer or wizard or necromancer tried had been of any genuine help. These charlatans delayed the advance of the blackness within him, but they couldn’t vanquish it.
A life of havoc and debauchery had left his dreams fulfilled and his enemies’ nightmares a reality, but there was always more mayhem to sow. Joe had a knack for it. A nose for destruction and a willingness to get his hands bloody, which had served him well over his many decades. But now the flame on his candle was dying down. Ready to be extinguished, and Joe didn’t look forward to the eternity of paying for what others called “his sins.” He knew he had no hope. No way to defeat this curse. This blackness on his body and soul.
