With COVID-19 taking over our lives in 2020, this might be one of the most common phrases we’ve been hearing –

“Don’t forget to check-in and check-out!”

After months of just the occasional expedition to our good ol’ neighbourhood Fairprice, Phase 2 has finally graced us with its presence. We can now embark on slightly more adventurous trips to restaurants, malls and more — while still facilitating contact tracing, of course. Venturing out into public places would mean stopping to whip out our phones at the entrance of every shop to scan the SafeEntry QR codes.

This would be a familiar sight to most of us:

To prepare for the further reopening of workplaces as the Circuit Breaker continues to ease up, the thought of designing a personalised SafeEntry poster for your company might have crossed your mind. This is a great opportunity to inject a little fun, reinforce your company’s branding, and transform a supposedly mundane poster into something that is uniquely your company’s own!

Here at 2359 Media, we’ve put together some best practices for designing your very own Safe Entry poster.

Best Practices for Safe Entry poster:

  1. QR code must be prominently displayed.
  2. Headline and SubHeadline
  3. Include only the most important information — Keep it to a maximum of 3 key points.
  4. Add colour and contrast
  1. Prominent QR Code

The most important element of your poster, the QR code, should be the main emphasis and ideally take up at least ½ or ⅓ of your entire poster. Just remember that the smaller the QR code, the closer a person has to be in order to scan it. This might cause congestions and unnecessary crowds at the entrance of your establishment. (Remember not to pack the rest of the poster with too much information as well, or it could become rather cluttered!)

2. Good Typography

Headlines are essential for capturing a user’s attention. All headlines should be legible from a distance of 1.5 metres away and differentiated with a single bold or heavy title font (otherwise known as a typographic hierarchy). This allows the user to see the poster from afar and also navigate through the content systematically, with the aid of a good typographic hierarchy.

3. Include only the most important information

Less is more!

Living in the new normal, QR code scanning should already be routine for everyone. Hence to further reduce clutter, instructions on how to download and scan a QR code would not be necessary.

As customers will be on the move while trying to spot the QR code, the poster will only be viewed for a maximum of 3–5 seconds. This makes it crucial for the focus to only be on what is important. To eliminate unwanted distraction and increase visual impact, limit all other information on the poster to 3 to 4.

4. Amp up the colours and contrast

While creating your own SafeEntry poster for your establishment, we recommend making use of striking colours to make it stand out to customers. Rather than to leave it to look like a standard piece of plain document, adding a pop of colour and contrast can make a huge difference in bringing it to life!

Take note of the number of colours you add though. Use it sparingly to avoid overwhelming viewers with too many or overly contrasting colours. Also, if your brand has illustrations or icons, this is the time to let them shine! Use them to nicely complement the information you have on your poster.

We have created a poster template (based on the SafeEntry template) for you to conveniently display at your entrance and exit zones.

Poster design (even a mandatory one) is an area for designers to have lots of fun. We hope we’ve inspired you to take your company’s SafeEntry poster out for a spin. Give it your company’s unique touch, stretch your imagination and create something fresh!

Here’s how we showcased our brand personality while implementing the above best practices in our own SafeEntry poster!
