One of our first ever cohorts

Since we started two years ago (where did the time go!?) we have focused on running evening courses to fit around a working womxn’s lifestyle. We started with in-person courses and then webinar courses that could be accessed from anywhere in the world (if you’re in the UK, this is still an evening course).

But then the requests started coming in for a daytime course. Something that parents could participate in during school/nursery/time with the grandparents hours. Something that could be accessed by those who have the flexibility of choosing their working hours and prefer learning earlier in the day. Something for students who have mornings off. Something that would work for people in time zones that are ahead of us.

We realised we weren’t being as accessible and as inclusive as we had hoped we were being.

So, applications are now open for our first ever daytime course.

It is an online webinar course that will run from 10am until 11.30am every Wednesday for 12 weeks. It starts on the 12th September, 2018.

Just FYI, you don’t have to type as quick as this when you apply :)

What is a webinar?

Each lesson will be a live webinar session where a teacher will present theory, exemplify it with code, complete an exercise with you, and then set you exercises to complete solo or in pairs. Some classes will be more theory based, others more practical- expect a good mix.

A webinar is a seminar conducted online- you will see the teacher, the teacher’s presentation or screen, and you will have the ability to ask questions during the class through the webinar software.

Something a bit like this!

Who is the course for?

This course is for beginners.

For those who have no (or very little) coding knowledge.

There is no age restriction. If you are under 18, you will need signed parental consent.

What is the course?

It is a beginners course focusing on front end web development.

Front end web development focuses on the visual side of the web- the side that consumers interact with.

Content

We will be looking at HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.

We will focus on making websites accessible for everyone- how well does your website work for people who are colour blind, visually impaired, who use screen readers, or who are using feature phones that do not show images or colour or animation? We make sure we are building websites for everyone as much as possible.

We will learn how to make responsive websites- websites that look good on a tiny phone as well as a large screen smart TV.

Support

There are two teachers during each class. One will be teaching and one will be helping answer questions.

We use slack to answer your questions in between classes, review your homework, and share interesting resources.

It is also your way to communicate with your peers and help each other. Once you graduate you will join the alumni Slack channel so you can always be there for one another and share what you learn.

We are known for our friendly and open learning environment, which focuses on supporting one another rather than ego and competition, and this will not be lost online. We are keeping online cohorts small so we can have individual relationships and meaningful support.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course you will:

  • have a solid foundation in front end web development.
  • be able to build a website that works across all devices.
  • have completed solo projects and group projects.
  • understand accessibility and be able to implement best practices.
  • you will be able to put your development skills on your CV which will give you an edge in today’s work market as having a technical know how is seriously in demand. Learning to code is extremely relevant for lots of jobs in marketing, HR,PR, design and many other industries.

NB: If you want to transition into becoming a full time web developer, this is a good foundation to begin from. However, you will need to put in a lot more hours of practice outside of lesson hours and after the 12 weeks. If this is your goal, talk to us so we can give you one to one advice on the best routes to do this.

How much is the course?

£550
