We’re going online…again!

Our awesome graduate, Petra!

Last year we launched our pilot webinar course- a course that enabled us to teach women who either lived outside of London, wanted to dip their toes into web development, had other commitments, were unable to attend an in-person course, the cost was prohibitive, or they prefer learning from home- this year, we’ve decided to do it all over again!

Many of our previous graduates became tech enthusiasts- attending events, participating in Hackathons, getting involved with the online community, and building open source projects. Some have had career changes, job promotions, or felt more confident in their current role. All of them expanded their skill set. Some are even training to become full-time developers. We learnt so much from the pilot cohort and, with our learning and their feedback, we have a new and improved course for you.

Below, you’ll find all the details for our next webinar course:

What exactly is a webinar?

A webinar is a seminar conducted online- you will see the teacher, the teacher’s presentation or screen, and will have the ability to ask questions during the class through your laptop’s microphone or by typing in a chat box.

Dates and times?

Day: Wednesday
Time: 8pm-9.30pm
Start Date: 10th July
End Date: 25th September
Graduation party: October 2nd- This will be in London, for those able to attend, to celebrate everyone’s achievements.

How much is the course?

£550

Who is the course for?

This course is for beginners. For those who have no (or very little) coding knowledge. There is no age restriction. If you are under 18, you will need signed parental consent.

What happens each lesson?

Each lesson will be a live webinar session where a teacher will present theory, exemplify it with code, complete an exercise with you, and then set you exercises to complete solo or in pairs, usually as homework.

You will be invited to join our Slack channel- here you can access recorded videos, work together with your peers, get help from teachers and each other, find extra resources, and be part of our community channel with all of our alumni.

What will be covered?

We will be focusing on the foundations of web development. This is a front end course.

You will learn:

  • How to use Atom as your text editor for writing code
  • HTML- the skeleton of the web
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)- how to style the web
  • Javascript- a programming language
  • Best practices like responsive development
  • Accessibility
  • Opportunities available in tech

The course requires you to build a final project too which will give you the practice and experience of building something from planning stages to deployment.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course you will:

  • have a foundation in front end web development.
  • be able to build a website that works across all devices.
  • have completed solo projects and group projects.
  • understand accessibility and be able to implement best practices.
  • you will be able to put your development skills on your CV which will give you an edge in today’s work market as having technical skills is seriously in demand. Learning to code is relevant for many jobs across industries and professions.

NB: If you want to transition into becoming a full time web developer, this course will give you the first steps to demystify the profession, terminology, and web development. However, this is a basic foundation. Post course will require further and more in depth learning in the field you wish to transition into through individual learning or other courses. If this is your goal, talk to us so we can help advise you on a road map.

Hear from our graduates!

Our graduate Kelly with her family

We’re so proud of all our graduates and love sharing their stories and success.

Below our graduate, Petra shares how she found learning to code.

“I used to create web pages through WordPress for myself and my friends and family in my free time. I developed a good understanding of the basics of coding thanks to Google and YouTube. I did the course to find out more about coding and needed a course which teaches in person, as I live in the countryside and couldn’t travel anywhere due to work and family. Committing myself to a weekly webinar with a real teacher was a no brainer.

During the course, I really liked that we could always ask questions and that the speed of the lesson matched the speed of which we were all learning — so nobody was left behind. Also, I liked that we could download and print the code and often re-watched the webinar videos to help me learn.

I learned so much by doing the course! For example, I learnt about media queries, readability, alt tags and so much more. Currently, I’m creating a new webpage where I can apply all my new skills.

The main thing I learnt from the course — is that I can do this! I just needed a person who could explain code logically to me, instead of getting lost in an information overload on the internet. In August this year, I will be starting a boot camp to become a Full Stack Developer!

You can also read our graduate Kelly’s blog to see how she found learning to code online.
