NFT music series 6: Lore Lixenberg on her piece VOXXCOIN
Watch my interview with composer Lore Lixenberg on her NFT piece VOXXCOIN. It is a blockchain opera in two acts that explores how digital forms can be transformed into opera, with the purpose of looking at the liminal space between analog and digital worlds and the dichotomy and meaning of being a flesh machine in a digital world.

Act 1 is the exploration of the idea of Potlatch, a distributed system of currency that is viewed as having aspects in common with blockchain-based currencies. Potlatch is an app, presented as a website with two pages, a view page, and a submit page. The view page is a graphic simulation of a blockchain consensus algorithm from an open-source web app ‘The Daily Blockchain’ that monitors existing cryptocurrencies. A machine learning model is fed participants’ vocalizations, from which it then processes the vocalizations that are then attached to the visual blockchain so the characters in the blockchain give the illusion of narrating their actions in an opera of exchange.

Act 2 explores the idea of a meritocratic paradigm, where value systems are attached to different vocal gestures, each one being worth more than the other or not, dependent on a specific set of parameters. Stake creates NFTs out of participants, encoding their vocal gestures into NFTs using OpenSea on the Polygon chain.

Lore Lixenberg is a contemporary art music composer whose pieces are exploring the meaning and new forms of opera and voice performance, reframing the extended Bel Canto voice, in the age of pluralities and multi-musics. For example, transhumanism, escape from the human form and interspecies communication underpin the shamanistic piece ‘BIRD. (Nominated for the Prix Heidsieck Centre Pompidou). Coming out of the trauma of Brexit, and standing in the UK election of 2019, she created the real-time opera and political party THE VOICE PARTY in 2017.
