VR music series: 4 musicians with heartbeat sensors and VR headsets composed by Alexandra Hallen
Watch my interview with Alexandra Hallen on her piece “4 musicians with heartbeat sensors and VR headsets”. In this piece, the musicians are not using their own instruments to perform the piece but become the instruments of the composer. With this piece, Alexandra wanted to explore how she could create a private space where the musicians are deprived of their orientation in the room and thus luck the contact with the audience. With this piece, she wanted to further explore what would happen if musicians were told to meditate while watching something unsoothing, and how their pulses would react to those video clips or sounds. The piece was commissioned by Distractfold Ensemble and supported by KODA Culture

Alexandra Hallén is a multi-faceted artist, composer and performer who explores the boundaries of herself and the audience. She was born in Sweden but, currently, lives in Denmark. By using objects or creating situations, she brings reality into the art, and thus provokes genuine emotions and bodily reactions (e.g. bathing in ice to feel really cold, and cutting into onions to bring out real tears). The performers in Halléns pieces are no longer mediators of the composer’s emotions as they have to live their own real emotions and bodily sensations in order to perform the work. She is the artistic director and founder of the ensemble Krumbuktus.
