Sharing source files is something we encourage in the 2Dimensions community, as it promotes learning and it inspires other users to riff, remix, and build upon your work (if you allow it).

When sharing your work with the 2Dimensions community, you’re given the option to “Share Source.” This option adds an “Open in Nima” button to your shot page, which allows other artists to open your file.

However, enabling “Share Source” merely permits other artists to preview your file in read-only mode. They cannot make changes or use your file as a starting point for their own idea unless you enable “Allow Fork.”

When you also enable “Allow Fork,” you give artists the ability to fork (or copy) your file. Forking uses your file as a starting point for a new file, encouraging other users to riff, remix, and build upon your work. When you enable “Allow Fork,” we ask that you select one of six Creative Commons copyright licenses. These offer a simple, standardized way to protect your copyright while allowing others to use your creative work.

From the Creative Commons:

“Every license helps creators — we call them licensors if they use our tools — retain copyright while allowing others to copy, distribute, and make some uses of their work — at least non-commercially. Every Creative Commons license also ensures licensors get the credit for their work they deserve.”
