Step #4: Just go sit in a different chair

I can not tell you how many times I have put together something that only had pictures. If it is clear to me that the manufacturer took the time to competently construct the set of steps to achieve “the thing,” I feel happy to be on the receiving end of clear instructions. On the other hand, we’ve all tried to make heads or tails out of something that leaves us bewildered (see above, The Chair).

When communicating visually, there are so many things to consider. Since science tells us that people process visual stimulation at lightning speed, the transmission of content and message should be immediate, and be able to keep the attention of your audience. It should also make sense. People only remember about 10% of what they hear and only about 20% of what they read. However, throw a graphic representation of a concept into the mix and people will remember 80% of what they see.

The first question I ask myself when creating any type of media is how can I most efficiently and effectively convey this message?

Data graphics are a perfect example of communicating a concept visually using less necessary words. For example, this small portion of a larger infographic shows the reader that there were numerous hazardous spills and how many of them were characterized as serious. Incorporating the train image reinforces that these were only hazardous spills by rail operators.

The infographic below does not contain any numbers or hard data but instead explains a more complex subject using a story. A visual learner can skim the headlines and icons to quickly understand the concept being presented.

Animation and motion graphics are extremely effective visual communication tools, and can convey a meaning in far less time than it takes to “explain” something. This set of instructions was designed as an animation. Instead of reading the “how to” steps, a user can visually learn how to access the membership area of this site by watching this animation.

Clear communication with your audience is a must—especially today with the excessive amounts of data and graphics colliding into our minds (and devices) at an alarming speed. As a designer, I pledge to use my powers for good: To help cut down on this noise by using strong visual media to create more memorable experiences.
