The pessimist sees the half glass empty. When he is being approached for new opportunities, the first thing comes to his mind is, are there enough challenges that are setting him for failure.

Such people are rarely inclined to raise hands for tasks or to offer assistance. When assignments fall on them, instead of seeing upcoming challenges as learning opportunities, they associate new challenges with obstacles that would expose their inabilities.

The mindset behind the hesitation to embrace proactivity on demonstrating leadership qualities and taking affirmative actions is the “Can’t do” mindset. It is easier to convince your brain to believe that “I’m not qualified for this” or “I don’t have enough experience to take the lead on this” than to accept the challenges and figure it out later.

While it is humbling to examine your real skillset to some degree, if you train your brain to believe that you shall limit yourself in the comfort zone, over the time, you lose the motivation and the self-confidence to even give some try for the new challenges!

The can-do spirit, on the other hand, is a positive mindset of believing you will achieve what you believe you can achieve and by saying yes to opportunities. People with the can-do spirit sees life as a learning journey full of self-exploring and adventure. By saying yes to exploring a new path, you are more likely to target and improve your weakness and strength your skillsets.

In any business, it is rarely a repeating cycle for each project to automatically re-use the past experience. By employing a can-do spirit, you are adapting to a changing environment and equipping yourself the awareness of the amount of the efforts you need to invest in order to be a valuable team player, not just another team member.
