Why developing brand new, different improvement muscles is so important

The Problem

The nature of advice given to a general audience is that it tends to be high-level, simple and meant for beginners. Often, it moves the learner from a place of zero knowledge to a point where they can understand the inner workings of their field for the first time.

However, what should someone do as they gain more expertise? In fact, how do experts continue to make improvements?

It’s unlikely that Lewis Hamilton, Serena Williams and Tom Brady are scouring Amazon for introductory books to their sports. Often, they hire coaches who act as their diagnosticians. Or, more accurately, these outsiders help these athletes analyze their performance.

But history shows that top athletes are rarely passive recipients of such advice. They have reached the height of their sports because they are also expert diagnosticians in their own right. They act as final decision-makers of what their plan of improvement should contain.

Back here in everyday life, only a tiny handful of people have task management coaches. But as we make progress, we all still need to make “The Switch” from taking general advice meant for beginners, to using specific personalized insights necessary at a more advanced level.

However, this isn’t a message too many productivity gurus promote. The truth is, it’s hard to tell people the truth about the approach experts actually use. It’s complicated…which makes it hard to explain to a wide audience in a short book, blog post or podcast.

But it still needs to be understood and accepted if you are to continue making progress.

Why is this important?

Spend a moment on Reddit, Quora, and other forums for task management and you’ll see the struggle. People who hunger for improvements ask anyone who will answer for advice: “Which techniques and apps are you using?”

Don’t fall into this trap.

The logical next step after performing a quality diagnosis is to create a great improvement plan with realistic steps. Focus your efforts on the Pareto Improvements you have outlined, rather than wasting time chasing bright, shiny improvements objects.

What’s the Link to the Rapid Assessment Program?

The program gives you the tools to make “The Switch”. With your personalized profile and improvement plan, you will never view random outside advice the same way. Also, new technologies become less enticing unless they happen to match the planned changes you intend to make.

Instead, with more energy focused in just the right places, you make faster progress.
