An Open Letter to Future 2terns

Dear New 2tern,
Hi!
I’m Bryan. My employee summary says I started 5 months and 5 days ago, and I can promise you that ever since then I’ve learned something new every day. Whether it’s the name of a new 2Ute, that there are new size requirements for Facebook sponsored posts (which happens very often), or that there is a new snack in the kitchen (which also happens very often); I always leave work with more knowledge.
Since I started as a 2tern, I’ve switched desks three times, job positions once, and have seen 2U continue to progress and grow along the way. Currently, I’m an intern on the digital media strategy team and was previously an intern with brand marketing. In both of my positions I’ve learned meaningful skills. As a brand marketing intern I learned the importance of working with university partners and researching to best position each 2U program. Now as a digital media strategy intern, I have the opportunity to learn how to operate advertisements on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. While I could ramble on and on about all of the fun and exciting things I’ve done and continue to do as a 2tern, I want to make this post all about you…
First of all, congratulations! 2U is an awesome place to work. The casual dress, frequent snacks, amazing humans and meaningful work have made my experience unimaginable thus far. Second, here’s some advice as you begin your journey here at 2U.
From one 2tern to another:
- Get to know your team! It always takes me a while to warm up to new people, but the more comfortable you are with your team, the better communication will be and the more fun you will have.
- When you have a question, ask. Believe me, I ask a dozen or so questions per hour (that may be exaggerative), and have never been told I ask too many questions.
- Get to know your fellow 2terns. Some of my best friends intern at 2U as well, and we have met some awesome new friends. A few of us even carpool here from campus in a Toyota Corolla that we call the 2Van.
- Whenever our CEO Chip announces a dance party or any other celebration, go! You haven’t experienced 2U at it’s best until you’ve heard hundreds of 2Utes belt “Don’t Stop Believin’”
- Get excited for 2U swag. I have more 2U swag than I think I can possibly use, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

- Embrace the commute! Regardless of which 2U office you work in, all of us 2terns have to commute. Make a cool playlist or read an interesting book. And just remember, there’s endless coffee waiting upon your arrival.
- Don’t take this experience for granted. 2U is doing incredible things, and as 2terns with actual responsibilities, we are helping drive real impact.
Again, welcome to 2U!
Your fellow 2tern,
Bryan
