Preparing
Over the past 3 weeks I have been constantly trying to make sure I am prepared mentally, materially, and physically for my long journey. It really is amazing how much stuff I have had to acquire for my trip. It’s more than a bike and a few shirts. So it’s been nothing less than a scramble to prepare.
There are obviously many dangers involved with cycling along highways. This is probably my biggest fear. Not everyone is a good driver around cyclers and I have had to make sure I have the gear to remain visible at all times.
My bike has been shipped up to Portland where I will be picking it up on Saturday. From there I will hop on a bus up to Astoria, OR where my journey will begin Sunday morning.
To make the 3,500 mile trek I will have to be averaging 60 miles of biking per day for 60 days. It sounds like alot, and it will be. However, taking it mile by mile I know it can be very manageable. It will test my physical limits to string 60 mile days over and over again, but I know the mental challenge will be greater.
I have a few days before I fly up, but I have alot more to do around here to be ready. I’ll be busy at work but rest assured that I’ll have more to say in a few days.
