Why people pay to read The New York Times: A great, thoughtful read on the importance of good journalism. Lydia Polgreen, who writes for the NYT, states the case that readers do indeed know the difference between aggregators and newsrooms that produce wonderful content, and they will be noticed. A nice reminder that it’s not all about Facebook. Thanks, Lydia.
How people use smartphones to access news: Mobile use is exploding, yet we knew relatively little about how people use their phones for news. Here’s deep analysis from the Knight Foundation about how news is consumed and who is consuming. Some tidbits: About 90% of people get news off their phones & people spend five times as much time on social media as they do on news (sorry, folks).
Facebook is the new paperboy: In an historic shift, newsrooms are losing control of distribution to social media, from Facebook to Snapchat. It’s a major change with profound implications for newsrooms, whose relationship with social media is already tense. (Full disclosure: I wrote this puppy.)
