Seattle, day two. I’m the first one up. a) I could get dressed, jump in the car and drive up to Verite Coffee in nearby Madrona for the morning caffeine run. Or b) I could take a dip in the pool and plunge a cup through our hosts’ French press.

Since it was a gorgeous, sunny day, I think you know which I opted for. And glad I did, because our hosts had recently attended a charity event and brought home a few bags of specially roasted, limited release Starbucks beans given to them by a company executive. The result was smooth, complex, nutty and unique.

Later that day, I took the family down to Pike Place Market for lunch, heading to an old favorite, The Athenean (since 1909). Serving halfway decent locally brewed coffee (Fonte), excellent fish and chips and a million dollar view, we settled in for a comfortable hour, enjoying this rare gem of a place.

That’s the thing about Seattle, even the local diners and old school establishments serve a decent cup of Joe. Next stop: Gig Harbor, Washington.
