Richmond Gets Groovy Too

Richmond, Virginia has a long history; which is apparent when you drive down Monument Avenue. It is the state capital, a center for banking and business for that part of Virginia, and on the North/South I-95 axis.

Richmond is also where my wife grew up. We had been on the road for 30 days and so pulled up to her parent’s house with no small amount of relief. We’d made it, thank God!

Since the weather was agreeable, we mainly looked forward to a bit of R&R and recounting tales of our adventure to her parents. After sleeping in a bit the next morning, I skipped my usual jump to the local Starbucks and searched for a more elevated cup at The Lamplighter Roasting Company, a place I’d never been.

Heading down to the Scott’s Addition part of The Fan, I was feeling more confident by my decision as the older, more colonial or Victorian buildings typical of that part of town gave way to renovated lofts and new economy businesses (tech, yoga, distilleries, etc.).

Lamplighter Roasting Company, Richmond, VA

The Lamplighter had all the requisite trimmings (hand-hewn wood, industrial cement floors, lots of stainless steel), fashionable baristas, and hipster clientele, with post-industrial alternative tunes reverberating off the walls (painted in muted hues, of course).

The coffee was good as well; great actually, for Richmond. The vibe was solid, and the scene was friendly. Well worth the drive to this out-of-the-way part of town, you might consider the Lamplighter if you’re ever in the area.
