Dragon spout ewer, Northern India, late 16th/early 17th-century, engraved with an extract from the ‘Throne Verse’ of Sura Baqara, 2: 255. In the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession no. 30.95.194

God, there is none but Him, the Everliving, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep seizes him. To Him belongs all that is in the Heavens and the Earth. Who can intercede with Him except those given His leave to do so? He knows what is before them and what is behind them and they know nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne encompasses the heavens and the earth, the care and keeping of which wears Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
