Day 25: Take a break

Fast life makes us vulnerable. It makes our immune system fragile, we don’t take time to get better when we get sick and we take too little time for ourselves. I should know, I’m guilty of all these unhealthy choices and I’m paying for it the last months being ill, especially the last week. But I’m still writing, it’s the one thing that stayed with me kindly and interesting enough, it helps me feel better. Mentally and physically.

So in this hectic lifestyle we have some options to heal. We can go for a long vacation, take time off and take a sabbatical or switch to doing something else for our career. The last option is of course also the hardest, but it can be done. I should know, been there, done that.

Since we sometimes need just a little push, a little care and a little hug to ourselves, I think it’s also good to know some small actions to make us feel better or to heal.

Hot shower

Think sauna. Think spa. Think wellness center. Awesome, right? If you have time, by all means, go there. But if time is scarce, make your bathroom feel like a sauna. I’ve always enjoyed hot, long showers, even in summer. Well, perhaps, summer showers were a bit shorter and not so hot as in winter, but still. In addition to that, I use some scented candles, a little bit of spa music and voila, home made sauna for a quick recovery.

Herbal tea

Our ancestors didn’t know pharmaceutical pills, vaccines or any of the goods of modern era. But they did know nature. They knew which herbs helped for specific illness and tea was of course herbal. From mint to some mountain tea, everyone can find tasty tea for feeling better. Add some honey, lemon, ginger or spices and you’re a real barista (or equivalent name for a tea maker).

Short stroll

Just for the fresh air, to fill the lungs with some much needed oxygen. Well, for fresh oxygen, nature is needed. You don’t get any of that cool breeze in the middle of a smoggy city. But since every city more or less has some parks, go there for half an hour, even in winter. So it’s a bit colder, so what. Put your skiing cap on, a scarf or two, thick jacket and sweater underneath and you’re on your way to feel better.

Take a break

From the experience, nothing beats shutting off the computer, your phone and all the digital world. Take a deep breath in real life, talk to your family, cook something, do all the above and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Love, Matjaz
