A billion questions entered my head upon beginning my internship at 36°N. What will I be doing? What if everyone hates me? Or what if the other intern I’m working with is 80 years old? You know, like the intern in the movie The Intern…? That would be wildly creepy, ridiculously awkward, and well… maybe I would love it- but you catch my drift.

Regardless, I came into the internship, like most people would, trying to make a good first impression. It was “mission: don’t screw up”. So Sarah (the other intern), who turns out is not an 80 year old man, and I were about to head out on our first day. Trying to be good interns, we decided to unload the dishwasher. As we began to unload I noticed that a mug had some coffee marks on it. Nevertheless, I put it in the cabinet anyways. As we continued to put mug after mug in the cabinet, we came to the realization that these dishes were indeed unwashed. There was even a sign on the dishwasher that said “DIRTY”… oh silly interns! We couldn’t remember which dirty dishes we put in the cabinet so we guessed and loaded the dish washer back up. Tears began to form in my eyeballs from laughing so hard.

Side note: dear 36°N members, if you got a dirty mug last week, my apologies- just helping you get that rock hard immune system.

In conclusion, mistakes can be fun! If Sarah and I had not totally messed up, we wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to share that laugh on the first day. People have the ability to grow so much from getting things wrong. What’s really cool about being a part of 36°N is that the space is filled with entrepreneurs who are achieving things, but also making mistakes and learning from them. Every entrepreneur can learn from others mistakes, and if they fail they have a group by their side- even if that’s unloading dirty dishes!

*Please know we do much more as interns than dishes. We just do the dishes for fun!*
