Who are you, and what are you doing here?
In one of my first college classes, my professor asked the question: “Who are you, and what are you doing here?” For a freshman in college, this was a tough question since it was my first time out on my own in this big, new world. I didn’t quite know how to respond and gave a quick, basic answer, then tried to move the conversation to the next person as soon as I could.
Fast forward to the present where I am a semester away from graduation. I have often reflected on this question during my college career; answers have changed and at times I have felt like that freshman who didn’t know who they were or what they were doing there. In all of this, I have realized the importance of personally answering this question of who I am and what am I doing here. During the times I could easily answer my professor’s question, I was satisfied with my work, gained confidence, and felt I had a purpose greater than myself. I don’t think I am alone in this — knowing who you are translates to confidence and knowing what you are doing provides purpose.
So to answer my professor’s question now: My name is Sarah McKelvey. I am an intern with 36°N and a student at Oral Roberts University. I’m passionate about organization, helping businesses achieve their highest potential, and problem solving through hard work. I’m here to be involved in the creation of ideas that move people to do great things, learn new things, and embrace the entrepreneurial community. That’s who I am and what I am doing here, what about you?
