🔴🟠🟡 Here is a mapping we created to represent the Italian VC ecosystem!

While our list is not exhaustive, we think it gives a great representation of how the ecosystem has evolved and its potential for the future!

🔥 The Italian ecosystem nowadays counts more than 200 professional investors among VC, CVC, Private Equity and Family Offices. In our mapping we tried to represent the more active players in the market reporting more than 60 investors among CVC, VC, Family Offices and Club Deals. We also reported some of the international investors that have participated in Italian rounds. Indeed, the presence of foreign investors is becoming more and more relevant, a signal of the potential the Italian innovation landscape is starting to show.

💸 The Observatory on Venture Capital in Italy, conducted by Growth Capital together with the Italian Tech Alliance, reports total investments of €527M euros in Q3 2022 and over €1.5B in the first nine months of the year, a sum that already far exceeds investments for the entire year of 2021. 58 rounds were completed in Q3 2022 in line with the previous quarter (62). This brings the total number of rounds for the first nine months of the year to 197. Fintech is the sector with the most rounds, followed by Smart City, DeepTech and Software.

Among the most interesting indicators of the Italian ecosystem’s maturation are the increase in the number, and value of Serie A rounds, as well as the increase in the number of Late-Stage rounds. Among the major drivers of growth in the sector, we note an increasing presence of international investors in Italian rounds, which have taken part to more than 30% of the rounds, as well as increased institutional support.

📈 While the VC investment in Europe is seeing a downturn compared to 2021, with a reduction of 6% in the amount of invested in the first nine months of the year, Italy has seen an increase of investment of 46% compared to 2021. In terms of investments Italy is now where Spain was 4 years ago but the growth is expected to continue with the following years driven by the support of institutions, with the reforms of the last years CDP Venture capital has reached a total of €2.8B capital to be invested in startups in the next years.

2022 has also seen the rise of Italy’s second unicorn 🦄 Satispay, which closed a round of €320M. Some other relevant investments for the year have been Newcleo (€300M), Scalapay (€188M), Casavo (€100M), Unobravo (€17M) and XFarm (€17M). The first three quarters of 2022 have also seen a total of 28 exits.

🤝 🎙 September and October were two months full of events for the Italian ecosystem. TechChill, Italian Tech Week, Smau, and “Venture Capital: Motore dell’innovazione” organized by the Italian Tech Alliance, are just some of the events to which we took part.

It was incredible to see how the ecosystem is evolving, not only with regards to startups, which are increasing in number and quality, but also regarding the panorama of investors active in Italy or looking to invest in Italy!
