Torquay has a lot going for itself. It has lovely beaches, crystal clear water, and good weather (for Britain), but what many people don’t know is that it has tons of history! Located in this scenic town on England’s south coast, Torre Abbey is a rich tapestry of history, art, and culture that draws visitors from around the world. Founded in 1196, this former monastery has seen waves of history unfold on its grounds, transforming from a medieval abbey into a Victorian family home and eventually into a dynamic cultural hub. Today, it is one of Devon’s most treasured historic sites, not only showcasing its past but also its present hosting contemporary art and community events.

The History of Torre Abbey

The Abbey was established by the Premonstratensian order of canons in 1196, making it one of the oldest surviving abbeys in the country. Known for its white-robed monks, the Premonstratensian order was dedicated to a life of contemplation, education, and agricultural labor. During the Middle Ages, the abbey became a spiritual and economic center in the region, with its lands extending across much of South Devon.

It remained a monastic centre until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, under the reign of King Henry VIII. After the dissolution, Torre Abbey and its land were sold to Sir Hugh Pollard, beginning its life as a private estate. The Cary family, who acquired the property in the 17th century…
