My Oculus Rift
Last week my own Oculus Rift headset arrived. I decided to jump into VR and 360 immersive video very quickly. Few hours visit at my old friend’s company http://virtualion.pl and I was completely sold on the idea.
- After a week I had my 360 camera.
- In week two I started to learn React VR
- Now, less than three weeks after, I got my Oculus.
Strangely it was not my first contact with VR. More than half a year ago, at London Boat Show, I had a chance to jump on board of racing yacht with the help of VR headset. The experience was intense — I even started to compensate for the yacht tilting at one point — but somehow it did not leave lasting impression and I’m wondering why.
There could be few reasons. First of all, I’m not really into yacht racing, but probably the most important was a fact it happened in public space, at a show.
My son and friend were waiting for the turn. There were already other people waiting in the queue and I felt I must do it quickly. I was also all the time aware of the surroundings and doing it in the public somehow didn’t feel comfortable or safe.
The second time at my friend’s place was totally different. I knew them for years and I could trust them. I knew they like to show me something which is very important for them. I also knew we can take as much time as needed.
I’m wondering if difficulty with trying VR does not constrain adaptation of this technology. You must experience it before buying it but you have the best experience if you are doing it at home.
