Just Listen by Mark Goulston

My lovely wife recently shared the distinction between ‘Listening’ and ‘Hearing’.

Though I thought I knew the difference, not until I read this book and really ‘l-i-s-t-e-n-e-d’ to my wife did i really discovered what i was missing out on.

Listening …is one of the keys to initiating progress and overcoming resistance.

Monkey see, Monkey do …is in fact an action triggered from our so called ‘mirror neurons’.

Our brain is divided into three layers …reptilian; mammalian; emperor;

reptilian — is very primitive and is designed to react to a situation.

mammalian — is evolved and brings up emotions such as sadness, joy, grief, pleasure, anger, jealousy, love.

emperor — is above the other two and has time to collect, analyse data and make choices based on rationale. An emperor makes decisions based on collecting data from all his kings who rule their individual kingdoms, and thus choosing what is right for his empire and not every kingdom (if you know what i mean).

Similar to how our different layers of the brain reacts to the world differently …our conversation partners also do the same …so it is upto us to bring our conversations to the level we want to have it at.

Empathy …the best way to make others feel understood and valued.

Should one feel nervous, stressed, afraid …don’t pretend — just share with one who listens.

Knowing thy emotions and sharing it openly, creates a clear communication channel that makes everyone feel understood.

This level of openness makes the sharer trustworthy and respectful.

Takeaways …

  1. Embrace being Vulnerable
  2. When you want someone to Listen to you, become receptive to your ideas …the one thing you want to do is Listen to them first.

Thanks ….
