Product News

We launched Ethereum Profiles and 3Box DB.

  • Create a profile for your Ethereum address at 3box.io
  • We’re already up to 1,692 npm installs for 3Box.js

We published a 6 month roadmap.
Coming soon is improved performance with caching, a graphql integration, application-specific spaces, and richer profiles including verified web2 social accounts and contact information. Read more about our roadmap here.

We shared a draft specification for Spaces.
Spaces are application-specific datastores within 3Box which improve data security and data access control granularity. We invite you to have a look through the spec, written by Christian Lundkvist, and share your thoughts on the Github issue!

3Box is spinning out of uPort

3Box is becoming an independent project.
The 3Box and uPort teams jointly decided the best path forward is to operate as independent teams. This allows both projects to dedicate 100% of their time and energy into making their projects successful. Personally, we’re excited to focus on making Ethereum Profiles and 3Box DB a more mature community. 3Box is still a part of ConsenSys and we plan to work closely with uPort wherever possible. More on this in another post.

3Box team offsite in Morocco.
3Box core team had a super productive week in Morocco: revisiting our vision and building our roadmap. We’ll share more details from the week soon, but for now check out the quick video summary, narrated by Danny Zuckerman.

**We encoded a secret into the activity layout of the riad. Specific activities occurred in specific parts of the house. We’re giving out surprise swag to the first person to report the correct answer in our Discord. (If you’re stumped, we’ll also share hints in Discord for those who ask too.)

Community, Partnerships, and Integrations

So much community 💙at Devcon.
It was great to experience the community’s excitement around 3Box in person and hear so many ideas for how to make 3Box better! Thanks to everyone who chatted with us and rocked our 3Box shirts!

Identity Claims Demo: 3Box with ERC725 and verifiable claims
Tyler Yasaka
, one of our most active community members, built an identity claims demo that integrates 3Box with an ERC725 identity contract and verifiable claims. We recommend giving it a try.

To use the demo, make sure your wallet is set to the Rinkeby network. In the app, 3Box functionality works for everyone, but you will need Rinkeby ETH to link an ERC725 identity to your 3Box. This is because 3Box interactions are off-chain, while creating an ERC725 contract requires gas.

Our first external PR — also from Tyler!
A big thank you goes out to Tyler for spotting a tricky bug and adding code to always lower-case addresses. When not contributing to 3Box, Tyler spends most of his time building Origin. 🙂

Join our 3Box book club
One of the values that emerged from our retreat was constant learning. The launch of the 3Box book club is one way we’re implementing this value in our monthly routines. We’re reading “The Square and the Tower” first and will be talking about it on December 18. Join us in the #book-club channel in Discord, and add suggestions for what we should read next!

People and Hiring

We’re hiring!

If you know any fantastic…
* distributed systems engineers
* designers
* community developers
* otherwise amazing people
who are passionate about providing social infrastructure for people to build trust and connection online — send them our way!

Welcoming (back) Danny Zuckerman!

Danny has been with uPort since 2017 and was part of the initial 3Box team. Recently he had been spending time on a community-focused project, and we’re super excited to have him rejoining 3Box full-time to spearhead many of our business and operations efforts.
