BOULDER, Colorado — May 20, 2019 — Chief Scientist & founder Alyn Rockwood PhD, of Boulder Graphics LLC announces the release of SuperD™ for Rhino3D version 6, a fully-capable, 3D modeler for conceptual design. The SuperD app harnesses the popular recursive subdivision (SubD) interface, and with the app’s unique algorithm, produces superior surfaces in terms of smoothness and efficiency — this means that there are no troublesome extraordinary point (dimples), irregular triangulations, or patch clusters. The output is smooth (C2 continuous) and watertight.

Import of OBJ files allows users to download thousands of existing SubD models to produce higher quality, more efficient surfaces and to interface with the full suite of Rhino applications. SuperD ‘beautifies’ existing polygon files such as from laser data or rough designs, smoothing and ensuring water tightness for 3D printing (see Screenshot #2).

SuperD also fosters original creation of organic objects through its own, simple-to-use toolbar.

The 3D editing tools include all Rhino gumball operations. Also included are tools for extending the model through extrusion, subdivision, duplication and deletion. The SuperD model converts to Rhino B-spline model with a single button click. SuperD’s well-formed B-spline surface output means it serves as a powerful converter from polygons to surfaces.

“SuperD is for high quality sculptured surfaces,” says Dr Alyn Rockwood PhD whose research work as a scientist specializing in surfaces and textures had developed the algorithm and technology behind the patent-pending SuperD. “It has better triangulation, and fairer shape. A small database also has strong implications for cloud computing.”

Entrepreneur and former ACM President Alain Chesnais added, “SuperD is an exciting new app for conceptual modeling. It’s fun and it’s super fast!”

*I’ve been playing with SuperD and it’s amazing to find something so fast, easy to use and with such quality surfaces. Anybody in design, gaming or animation should have this app in their repertoire. [Any creator at any level can use it.] I can’t wait to get my 12 year-old daughter using it.” — Jos Stam, Chief Scientist, AutoDesk Research.

SuperD on Rhino is priced at $550. A 30-day trial version is available.

##

SuperD Feature Highlights:

  • Employs the popular SubD interface for a fast-learning curve and for intuitive creation of original models; or to access the existing SubD legacy of models.
  • High quality (mostly C2) surfaces, no extraordinary points, regular triangulations without cracks, without patch clusters, and it enables points, creases, darts and rounded edges of any degree of sharpness.
  • Converts polygon files to well-formed B-splines.
  • Fast and efficient.
  • Compact SuperD database.
  • Beautifies polygon files.
  • Creates watertight models for 3D printing.
  • OBJ and B-spline input/output.
  • Level of Detail (LOD) management.
  • Integrates seamlessly with Rhino3D.
  • 3D editing operations including box select, rotate, pan, scale, pull (extrude), duplicate, subdivide, delete, and B-spline convert.
  • Layering (groups).
  • Open or closed models with Bezier curve boundaries.

Requirements: Rhino3D version 6

Pricing and Availability: $550. A 30-day trial version is available.

Reviews:

“I have only been modeling with SuperD for a short time, but I can attest to its ease of use and superb versatility when it comes to creating designs. I was able to learn the basics of SuperD within a few hours of interacting with the plugin and that knowledge alone was enough to begin making intricate and precise models. SuperD has just enough controls to make it a useful addition to the already saturated Rhino software, but doesn’t overwhelm the user with too many uneccesary or redundant controls. I would recommend this plugin for anyone who wants to expand their modeling tools but also wants a quick and easy learning curve.”
