A luxury bubble wand

https://vimeo.com/110968083

Form

A generative, voronoi pattern has been chosen than can produce multiple linked bubbles. It is a quirky contrast between a serious generative pattern and its appropriation which can be seen as a metaphor for playfulness.

Function

When blown repeatedly, it produces a volume of bubbles which also happens to be a 3D voronoi pattern. This honestly is a happy accident. The idea of creating higher dimensional structures from a lower dimensional pattern has intrigued me a lot.

Design

The pattern is cut out from a larger pattern and converted to strokes using Adobe Illustrator. Outline stroke and offset path are applied so that the boundaries of the cells overlap. The combined paths are exported and trimmed using Rhinoceros. The contrours are then extruded to desired thickness.

Rendering using Cycles Renderer in Blender

Manufacturing

The 3D model is exported as an .obj and printed in PLA on a MakerBot Replicator 2. The print time is 2 hours 45 minutes.

Packaging

160gsm black matte finish card stock has been selected for the packing. The contour has been cut using a Cricut Explore machine and the box has been cut and assembled by hand.

Luxury Packing for the Bubble Wand
The title has been carefully engraved on the box in a minimalistic style
