How I Saved my 3D Printing Filament from Poor Storage & Humidity Damage

Racks and racks of neatly organized filament lay before me… little did I know it was all about to go bad. This was my first experience as a hobbyist 3D printer in storing 3D printing filament. When I got my first real 3D printer — a Creality V3 CR-10 Pro — I was so excited to wake up and be able to print something every day. Whenever I would receive a new roll of filament in the mail I would often throw out the silica gel packs that came with the rolls and take the filament rolls out of their plastic bags storing them in direct view of a window. I even ran a humidifier in the same room that I stored the filaments.

Within a few months two rolls of color changing filament had become three whole shelves of filament and a fledgling Etsy/Shopify business. There were other factors too that led to me buying so much filament — I live in Canada and recently customs fees have become a big hassle here. In the end it became much cheaper to order from a Canadian based wholesaler with a minimum order of $125CA for free shipping than to mess around with ordering a roll or two on Amazon. After all I figured they would last long enough for me…
