Polaroid Launches Line of Desktop 3D Printers

Famous for their cameras that produced instantaneous photos, Polaroid is jumping into a new form of production — desktop 3d printing.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, Polaroid announced a new set of small, affordable 3d printers and 3d printing pens that the company’s CEO says leverages the strength of his company.

“Creativity has always been at the heart of our brand,” said Scott W. Hardy, President and CEO of Polaroid. “For 80 years, we have given consumers the ability to express themselves and explore their own creativity, with the medium of instant photography top of mind. We could not be more excited to now offer another dimension with our new line of 3D printers and pens. Whether it be artwork, prototypes, jewelry, or models, we’re eagerly awaiting what our customers will create and just where their imaginations will take them.”

The new line of 3d printers from Polaroid — of which there will be 3 variations — will use non-proprietary 1.75mm filament, feature a child safety lock and app based control from iOS and Android devices. According to the company, the prices will range from $499-$799 depending on the printer.

The company is also releasing a set of 3d printing pens, which have become commonly used tools in classrooms across the country, particularly in art classes. One version of the 3d pen from Polaroid will be wireless while the other one will not be.

According to the company, the pens will be released this March and the printers will be available to consumers this summer.
