Journalism and media have long expanded their brands and branches to adapt to market trends, especially in digital spaces.

In 2021, boundaries are expanding as media outlets and publications are partnering with startups and creative initiatives, providing platforms for their content.

On May 17th (2021), music website Consequence (formerly Consequence of Sound) announced a new partnership with CREATV University, to share content for aspiring musicians, students, and industry professionals. CREATV describes itself as an “entrepreneurial hub of learning, mentorship, collaboration and democratized access and opportunity”.

Also on May 17th, music magazine Rolling Stone announced a partnership with startup accelerator Techstars Music to showcase its Demo Day (which took place on May 18th), an annual event for startups to pitch investors.

Journalism is no newcomer to the startup world, and it’s not the first time we see media outlets venturing on education either — see, for example, The New York Times, which launched its own Learning Network in 1998.

But as the Internet changes the way people consume content, it’s only expected that media companies and websites would endeavor into new possibilities, explore different business models, and look for new audiences. Conflicts of interest considered, there are several opportunities in education and content marketing for these companies and websites.

Also, it’s important that such partnerships are based on tight Intellectual Property (IP) rights agreements, in order to avoid IP disputes.
