What Year is It?

I am pleased to be able to participate in a particularly interesting private crypto related slack channel with a several rather interesting people. Today, something came up about what year it is.

Recall that it is my many humans measure 2017 A.D. That stands for Anno Domini. This translates more or less to "in the year of our lord" according to wikipedia.

According to the Chinese Lunisolar calendar it is the year 4714.

According to the Ethiopian calendar it is 10 Maskarram 2010 I think.

And, there are many more. But, not that many considering how long we humans have roamed the earth.

I'd hypothesis that these calendars tent to start during significant epochs in human history. I just discovered a new one today that I hadn't seen before, "The Year of Satoshi." It is currently 8 AS in the year 2017 AD. The implication would be that the year of the launch of the bitcoin blockchain marks a significant new epoch in human history. What do you think? Will humans look back in time some day and reference the AS calendar?

If you close your eyes and think about that its kind of epic. I don't know if it will take. The only people that know that haven't been born yet. But then, I don't know if back in the year 8 AD or the year 8 Lunisolar in China there were there people in the equivalent of slack channels saying, Yup, it’s 8 AD “The Year of XYX."

I guess time will tell!
