My dream and goal after college was always to join my father’s boutique recruitment firm. He has always been supportive of me, but urged that I gain my own experiences working and networking in the corporate world to gain perspective and insight into the industry I hoped to enter. In hindsight, I can see how important that experience was, and my number 1 takeaway is that everything is about relationships, especially in recruitment.

5 values that are imperative to recruitment relationships:

Honesty: Searching for a perfect candidate comes with all types of stress and the last thing you need is a dishonest recruiter with a substandard potential employee. You’ll want a search firm that not only understands your needs but also is a truthful, objective soundboard so you can get the right candidate in the door.

Patience: With tight schedules and the need for the quick dollar, many recruiters and headhunters just want to quickly fill the role. The importance of patience is realizing that neither party will be satisfied nor will the role be suitably filled if there is no concept of the long game. Our perspective is that by allocating an appropriate amount of time to clients to talk things out, we truly understand their needs.

Integrity: Work and life are so interchangeable these days and finding the right candidate is integral to a positive working environment. Therefore your recruitment search firm must have integrity at the top of their values list. If they are passionate about what they do, and they have each party’s interests at heart, you’ll know that they’ll endeavor to get the assignment absolutely perfect in order to retain the strength of your relationship. Integrity is our middle name!

Credibility: Ensure your recruiter has established strong personal networks, with trusted sources, a rich research capability while also having a meaningful, robust reference checking policy. These are the tools that lead to the right candidate. For us, referrals are our best form of networking.

Value: Even when you’re not searching for a candidate, if your recruitment search firm has taken the time to develop your trust and build rapport, chances are you’ll find reasons to confide in them and seek out their advice. We always tell clients and candidates that our partnership will always be a meaningful two-way relationship.

Relationships are 90% of the game; make sure yours is truly effective. ~ Rebecca Levin @martinkartininc
