One of my favorite advertising campaigns from the past 5 years is the DirecTV ‘Get Rid Of Cable’ campaign. The campaign, developed by Grey, has been running for several years. If you’re not familiar with the ads, they all start with an common frustration consumers have with cable companies before embarking on a ridiculous series of non-sequiturs. As the Grey creative director Steven Fogel described: ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if this annoying cable issue spiraled into a domino effect of events that turned into total awfulness for you?’ A few of my favorites are below.

Now Grey & DirecTV have turned to Twitter to source the story for their latest ‘get rid of cable’ advert and it’s surprisingly good. The mechanics were simple, fans were asking to contribute one line in the story by tweeting their suggestion with the hashtag #GetRidofCable. The company then curated the best ideas into a cohesive story, with each line flowing coherently into the next. It’s a very nice way of taking a successful TV campaign and extending to digital in a way that doesn’t feel contrived and plays to the strength of digital platforms (in this case Twitter).
