5 Ways to Get Started as a Freelancer
Whether you’re just looking to make some extra cash, or ready to start running your own business, here are 5 ways to get started as a freelancer:
Research your niche
As a freelancer, you’re essentially the CEO of your own business. Yep, I said it, you’re a business owner. And, when you own a business, it’s important to do your competitive research. Take some time to understand what the landscape is like in your specialty, and see if there is anything that sets you apart. If you’re a graphic designer, is there a tool or method you understand that others might not? As a marketer, do you specialize in marketing for a certain business segment? Understanding your competition and setting yourself apart is a great way to get started without being too overwhelmed.
Once you’ve done that, be sure you understand how others have become successful in that area and apply those factors. This will help you side-step any potential pitfalls.
Develop your marketing strategy
Unless you’re starting off with a giant book of business (in which case, good for you!), you’re going to need to develop some clientele. Word of mouth is good, but it’s likely not enough to make a substantial income. Understanding how to get your name out there is an important part of getting started. Decide if you’re going to run social campaigns (if you don’t know how to do this, or don’t have the time, ask how we can take care of that for you), get yourself into Google search results, or get some swag for your car or your closet to spread the word.
Get your portfolio ready
Once you get interest from potential clients, they’re going to want to see samples of what you’ve done. Having a portfolio or media kit at the ready is essential to showing off your amazing skills. Use your best work and have it in a format that’s easily shared, such as a website, PDF, or downloadable link.
Register as a freelancer
Depending on what industry you’re in, there are several different ways you can list yourself as an available freelancer. You can list it on your LinkedIn profile (and take advantage of their ProFinder tool), create a profile on UpWorks or Fiver, or use the appropriate tool in your area of expertise to get your name on the list. Some areas even have unions, and if this is for you, you’ll want to apply to become a part of it. In any instance, this step will put you in front of the people who are in need of your services.
Ready, set, go!
Finally, the only way to it is just to do it. Hit the pavement. Go to networking events. Talk about your business with people you meet. Have business cards ready. Get people in your life to give you a try, or ask for referrals from your existing clients. Set out a portion of each day to not only spend time on your business, but specifically spend time developing your business. Before you know it, you’ll be a freelancing pro!
