Project Compass

Turning camp skills into life skills

As we aim to deepen our impact on our campers, we are very excited to announce that in partnership with long-time supporter RBC, we will be launching a pilot youth leadership program designed to support Amici youth year-round!

The new pilot program will complement our core-focus of sending kids to camp. We want to continue to support youth once they reach the end of their eligibility as Amici campers, and help build on the skills they have gained from their years at camp.
At a time when the youth unemployment rate in Toronto lingers around 20%, the idea behind the initiative is simple: we want to help Amici campers with leadership potential translate their camp experience into work experience.

Project Compass Steering Commitee

To help us build a one-of-a-kind youth leadership program powered by camp, we have assembled Project Compass: a steering committee of professionals dedicated to youth empowerment. The Project Compass team truly exemplifies what it means to build the experiences of camp into their professional lives.

Leading the Project Compass team is Oliver Wyman consultant and former Onondaga camper, Chris Hartman, who first became involved with Amici in 2015 as part of the Oliver Wyman project team that supported the development of Amici’s five-year strategic plan.

“Amici means a commitment to providing growth and learning experiences to children through camp. Amici is life-changing because of their commitment to multiple years of experiences, and their commitment to the unique environment of camp. We plan to integrate these differentiating characteristics into this new program and ensure the program remains true to Amici.”
— Chris Hartman, Project Compass

The Project Compass team conducts monthly workshops (fueled by coffee and donuts) to brainstorm how the program should be designed, structured, evaluated and implemented. While this process is ongoing, program will offer leadership opportunities to deserving youth through a mentorship curriculum designed to launch in Fall 2017.

Project Compass is an exciting new phase for Amici and we can’t wait to see how the pilot takes shape!

The Project Compass team asked some Amici stakeholders “How can we design this program?” This is what we heard (Size of word indicates frequency it appeared in notes from all interviews).
