As one of the hottest tech trends of the day, digital twin is constantly being taken to new heights. Recently, Digital Twin City Research Report was issued by CAICT, a research institute directly affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, at China International Digital Economy Expo 2019, hosted by MIIT and the People’s Government of Hebei Province. The Report elaborates and analyzes the inevitability and necessity of digital twin technology empowering all walks of life based on the latest applications and landings of current digital twin in cities, parks, transportation, AI training, etc., in which 51VR’s R&D achievements and business practices in smart cities, smart transportation, and autonomous driving simulation are included.

51VR digital twin technology has gained new ground in the application of intelligent transportation.

On October 26th, at the 5th World Metropolitan Transport Development Forum, Guo Jifu, president of the Beijing Transport Institute, came up with a new idea of traffic management — scheduled travel. He pointed out that addressing traffic congestion in the future will not be utopian, but highly realistic, on the support of a series of technologies such as AI, traffic behavior simulation and so on.

Recently, the Beijing Transport Institute is developing a next-generation traffic simulation system. As a partner, 51VR actively participated in the R&D of this medium-microscopic traffic simulation system.

The first phase of this 3D visual micro-traffic simulation system, jointly created by Beijing Transport Institute and 51VR, takes Beijing West 3rd Ring Road for demonstration. Based on high-precision reduction of this 14.8 km ring road and traffic elements such as large overpasses, the system connects with a micro-traffic simulation algorithm, with the parameters of road flows, speed limits, traffic restrictions, etc. adjusted, imports the trajectories and automatically matches them with the road network, and ultimately presents contrast effects between simulation and video as well as among multiple schemes, which provides the basis for scientific decision-making for traffic management.

“The traffic congestion should not always be ascribed to the lack of transportation capacity, sometimes it is the result of the unreasonable distribution of traffic in the case of blind anxiety caused by uncoordinated or unscheduled travel. And now with the help of the latest technology, we can improve traffic management through artificial intelligence, micro-traffic behavior simulation, etc.” Guo said at the World Metropolitan Transport Development Forum.

With the development of micro-traffic simulation software, future research on traffic problems will be more in-depth, resolutions will be more innovational and more-dimensional comparative verification will be achieved in traffic management.

▲Improved traffic conditions brought by scheduled travel

Up to now, 51VR digital twin has been applied in smart cities, smart parks, smart driving, smart production, smart logistics, smart transportation etc., reaching nearly 40 cities and regions across the country. Together with leading partners like Huawei, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Alibaba, GAC, Daimler, BMW, China Merchants Group, iFLYTEC and SenseTime, 51VR empowers the digital twin upgrade and transformation in various industries.

In intelligent transportation, 51VR has reached into 3D real-time monitoring, equipment management and micro-traffic flow simulation. In the future, 51VR will branch out to application fields such as V2X simulation, urban traffic brain and intelligent decision-making.

It is foreseeable that, future urban planning, from road construction to the layout of city roads network, can all be visually reproduced and verified in the simulation scenarios, thus the problem of congestion can be effectively resolved. This exemplifies the empowerment of digital twin in intelligent transportation. As research deepens, digital twin technology will create more possibilities for addressing traffic problems.

As President Guo said, “addressing traffic congestion will not be utopian, but highly realistic. This is an opportunity brought by technology. Based on avant-garde technologies such as AI and traffic simulation, scheduled travel will be materialized sooner. Revolutionary changes will take place in future traffic.”
