Chocolate Covered

4069 24th St, San Francisco, CA 94114

I’m psyched to introduce you to Chocolate Covered this week, if you’re not already aware of this gem in Noe Valley. The minute you walk in, you’ll know you stumbled into something pretty special. If Willy Wonka had a private stash of chocolate hidden somewhere, I’d imagine it would look something like this place.

I was walking around on another beautiful day here in the Bay Area and saw a huge wooden sign that says CHOCOLATE, against an ultramarine blue painted storefront. That grabbed my attention so was intrigued to go through the dutch door and look around. As soon as I entered, Jack Epstein, owner of Chocolate Covered, welcomed me into his shop. I was instantly captivated by the floor to ceiling selection of both his artisan chocolate collection from around the world and his handmade cyanotype tin boxes. Not even five minutes into my visit, I witnessed people from the community stopping in, both kids and adults, smiling and heading straight to the back to say hi and chat with Jack. He would stop what he was doing to greet them and was quick to share stories about the Bay Area, his time in New York, cyanotypes and of course anything about chocolate if they wanted to know more. He even offered a sample of some homemade fudge that he whipped up (so good!). You can tell it’s a much loved neighborhood establishment.

This is the kind of shop and owner I created 52 Pick Up for. I want to bring awareness to people like this who are having a positive impact on their community and those they interact with. I want to see more stores like this survive and thrive. It’s what makes a city unique for locals and also a welcoming destination for tourists when they’re in town. When I go back to visit where I once lived in Miami or New York, I don’t run to the nearest Starbucks or other chain store, but instead enjoy going back to the small local shops to chat with the folks there who may even remember me from the last time I stopped in.

If you are in the Noe Valley area, stop in, say hi to Jack and pick up this week’s free painting. He has good stories and great chocolate. You can’t go wrong. :)
