When you meet Lacey Sher, chef and partner of encuentro restaurant in Oakland, California, you’ll quickly agree: she’s warm, welcoming and always smiling. All great qualities to have, especially when opening a restaurant.
encuentro started in December of 2008. Lacey had recently relocated back from the east coast and wanted to open a new restaurant in Oakland. At the time, she was pregnant and her business partner Linda said: “Let’s open something together! You don’t want a big restaurant. Let’s do this small place.”
A great space was available for rent right in the building she was living in. That was a plus given her commitment as a mother and partner in a new business. They started with a small lunch pop up called Lunch is Ready and later started encuentro cafe and wine bar.
Their restaurant highlights small production wines that are green certified, organic, sustainable or bio dynamic. encuentro prepares and serves delicious organic sustainable vegetarian cuisine. It is a very personal restaurant with the emphasis on harmony and well combined dishes that hit all the senses.

encuentro means “to meet, gather, encounter” and encuentro embodies exactly that — a neighborhood and destination restaurant featuring an eclectic mix of organic / sustainable wines from small, local and old world vintners.
Our menu highlights simple, flavorful, organic and local, vegetarian and vegan cuisine, hearty salads, local cheeses, plates to share and entrees. Our desserts are housemade. We utilize seasonal and market driven ingredients. In addition to an extensive wine menu, we serve small brewery beers, organic teas, coffee, and artisanal non-alcoholic beverages.
Hours of operation: Tuesday–Saturday 11am to 2pm and 5:30 to 10pm
