This week we’re staying in Oakland because of Dana Olson, the down to earth and super friendly owner of Good Stock who came as a recommendation from one of her customers. Ok, I have to admit, I’m a sucker for wood floors and library ladders so once I saw this place, I already knew there was a good chance I was going to like it. Good Stock is clearly loved by the community as well, as this store is a regular stop for some. Most occupants in the Piedmont area seem to be sensitive to overpriced bigger name shops moving into the neighborhood, so they were relieved to find that Dana’s shop is so unique. Soon after it opened and residents got to know her, they learned that she was the real deal. She’s passionately familiar with everything in her shop and takes the time to help each customer individually to find the perfect item that fits their needs. Good Stock carries natural skin care products, home goods and other rare finds, and a stunning collection of hand-made jewelry. One of the many special brands she carries is Meyelo, a line of jewelry and leather goods made by women in developing countries, empowering these artisans with sustainable income and support for their community. Gotta love that.
One of the common themes throughout this project that I’ve noticed from talking with small business owners is that they personally care about the products they are selling you. If they care about it and take the time to personally curate what’s in their store, then there’s a good chance you will find something you like too.
